<image:title>About Us - … & How It Has Evolved (Grown!)</image:title>
<image:caption>Afrikids has grown more than anyone dared imagine. We began by improving classrooms at the POSA preschool. Then, when six of the children were ready for primary school, we enrolled them at Usa River Academy, a nearby boarding school. Today, nearly 15 years later, we support a total of 145 students at different schools around the country. More than 30 students are now in senior high school, with 17 attending Makumira High School in Usa River. We also have 13 secondary school students at The Voice School, a coed boarding school in Usa River, and 25 younger students at Imbaseny Peace Primary, a day school also near Usa River.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tobias Keene, D.D.S. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. When not striving to keep his patients happy and healthy, he’s enjoys hiking with his family in Rock Creek Park.</image:caption>

<image:title>Art4Afrikids - Art with a Purpose</image:title>
<image:caption>Art for Afrikids began as a hobby during the 2020 COVID lockdown. Laurie needed something to keep her busy. So she taught herself the art of decoupage. Laurie started with coconuts but soon moved on to seashells after an amazing shelling trip to Sanibel Island on the west coast of Florida. The decoupaged and hand-painted shells were initially meant to be gifts only for family and friends. But in April 2021, we set up a booth at the Florida Keys Farmers Market in Islamorada and Laurie’s shell art quickly became a hit. Art for Afrikids is now a regular at farmers’ markets and art fairs in South Florida. 100% of the sales proceeds go to support our wonderful Afrikids students.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kitoi - Ombeni Kitoi Majenja</image:title>
<image:caption>Ombeni Kitoi Majenja (Kitoi) is the son of a Meru tribal chief and one of Tanzania’s top safari guides. He is also the local representative of Afrikids. More precisely, Kitoi is the heart and soul of the Afrikids program. We first met Kitoi —and fell in love with his smile, his charm and his personality— on safari long before Afrikids was born. When we started funding projects at the POSA preschool, not far from Kitoi’s home, he offered to help. Kitoi has been a huge part of Afrikids ever since. Kitoi and his wonderful wife Elly are like parents to our students, many of whom are orphans. Kitoi manages our relationships with the schools and looks after any and all issues that arise. He purchases school uniforms for the students, looks after them when there are health problems, and is always there when they need a helping hand. He is our superhero. Asante sana, Kitoi.</image:caption>

<image:title>Kitoi - It Takes a Village</image:title>
<image:caption>Kitoi’s whole family is part of Afrikids. His wife Elly (Mama Gerard) is a second mother to all the Afrikids students. She constantly looks out for them, while also raising her own three children — Gerard, Samantha and Laurie — who are enrolled at school with the Afrikids students. Whether looking after sick kids, preparing luncheons, hosting kids at her home, counseling students that are having problems at school, or providing some much-needed love and attention, Elly is an indispensable part of Afrikids. We are indebted to Elly for her love and her dedication.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Schools - Scolastica School</image:title>
<image:caption>The Scolastica School located near the town of Moshi, about 60 miles east of Arusha, is home to the majority of Afrikids students. Scolastica, which includes both primary and secondary levels, is one of the top English-curriculum schools in northeastern Tanzania. With a couple of exceptions, all of the Afrikids students live in the school dormitories. As many of our students don’t have stable homes to return to during school holidays, Scolastica helps Afrikids stage a three-week camp over winter break just for our students, where they receive extra tutoring and learned valuable life skills such as cooking, laundry and cleaning. We are extremely grateful to school director Elizabeth Shayo for all the wonderful support.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are grateful to our sponsor Betsy Hoke for introducing us to the Imbaseny Peace English Medium School run by the colorful and effusive Pastor Kleopa, pictured at left with Betsy and six Afrikids students, who are currently enrolled at Imbaseny. The beautiful campus of the Imbaseny Peace School includes preschool and primary school grades. With Betsy’s assistance, the school is developing a Montessori program for its younger students. A former Montessori teacher and owner of a Montessori school in Colorado, Betsy is training the Imbaseny teachers in the Montessori method. We had the great pleasure of experiencing some hands-on learning with the children when we visited in September 2021. Afrikids looks forward to continuing its support for the Imbaseny Peace School and sponsoring more students in the future.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Schools - The Voice Secondary School</image:title>
<image:caption>Afrikids has three students enrolled at The Voice Secondary School — Junior, Jaelly and Hamza. The Voice is a boarding school located in USA River. The school founder and director Daniel Mpanduzi, pictured here with Kitoi, Jaelly, Junior and Laurie, is an educator with an inspiring vision. When asked about the story behind the school’s name. Daniel explained that The Voice makes a point of recruiting students that are considered outcasts in some communities, especially albino children, and students with aids and other disabilities. “These are children who have no voice. Here, we help them find their voice.” We are confident that our kids will find their voices under Daniel's guidance. Afrikids is happy to support his efforts and the mission of The Voice.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Schools - POSA Preschool</image:title>
<image:caption>When Samantha and Bobby volunteered at POSA in Usa River in 2010, they taught under a plastic tarp while the kids sat on rough blankets on the bare ground. We decided to help make some changes. We provided money to build latrines and furnish classrooms. We purchased blackboards, desks and chairs. Samantha’s cousin Lauren Keller raised funds by selling bracelets at her high school in Miami to buy tile flooring. It was a family affair. And everyone pitched in. Our relationship with POSA continues. We pay the monthly rent for the two classrooms. And we pay for a woman in the village to deliver fruits and vegetables for the kids each day. During the COVID shutdown in 2020, Kitoi arranged a food distribution for the POSA families. (See more POSA photos below.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Fundraising - Where Our Funds Come From</image:title>
<image:caption>Each year, as the Akrikids program expands, the demand for funds increases. The majority of our funds come from long-term supporters, who sponsor one or more students, paying school fees and medical expenses throughout the year. We also receive donations from individuals who learn about Afrikids from our sponsors or from Kitoi, who delights in telling the Afrikids story to his many safari guests from around the world. In 2020, for example, we received significant donations from the Elvinger family of Luxembourg after meeting Kitoi on safari. In addition, we conduct a number of fundraising activities. In March 2022, for example, the Afrikids Club at Palmer Trinity School in Miami —where Samantha and Bobby met and where Bobby now teaches— sold Maasai bead bracelets, earrings, and other artisan work to raise money. Also, Art for Afrikids, created by Laurie Evans in 2020, has become an important source of additional funds for the program. Learn more about Art for Afrikids by clicking on the Art4Afrikids tab. Every dollar counts. If you would like to be a part of the Afrikids journey, we encourage you to make a donation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Sponsors - Our Wonderful Sponsors</image:title>
<image:caption>Afrikids is blessed to have the support of committed and passionate sponsors, who step up each year to cover the education and living expenses for one or more students. It’s a significant investment and we are grateful to all of you. Currently, we have 40 individuals and families that sponsor students — 18 in Florida, 14 in Colorado, 3 in Michigan, 2 in North Carolina, 1 in California, 1 in Nevada, and 1 in Switzerland. We are also fortunate to many wonderful donors, who do not sponsor specific students but support the Afrikids operation in a big way. As the program continues to expand, we are always on the lookout for new sponsors and donors. Many of our sponsors, such as Jeff and Marta Liroff in this photo, have traveled to Tanzania to meet the students and visit the schools. It’s what it’s all about! See the gallery of smiling faces at the bottom of this page. Asante (thank you) to all of you for supporting Afrikids.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Sponsors - Corporate Sponsor: Africair, Inc.</image:title>
<image:caption>Afrikids is also very fortunate to have a corporate sponsor, Africair, Inc., which has backed the project since its inception. A family-owned business, Africair is the world’s largest distributor of Textron Aviation aircraft (Cessna & Beechcraft), representing Textron Aviation in 46 countries in and around Africa. Africair is also the Independent representative for helicopter manufacturer Bell Textron Inc. in 40 countries in the region. Four of the Africair owners are individual sponsors of Afrikids students. The company provides support by underwriting travel and accommodation expenses for Afrikids directors when they visit Tanzania to work with Kitoi and the students. Afrikids is immensely grateful for Africair’s ongoing support. Asante!</image:caption>

<image:title>The Community - Food Distributions</image:title>
<image:caption>Most of our students come from Usa River just outside of Arusha. They grew up poor and many are orphans. But once they were enrolled in the Afrikids program, they became the lucky ones. There are many, many other children in Usa River and nearby villages, who too often go hungry. Whenever we can, we try to make a difference for the whole community. When COVID shut down schools and Tanzania’s tourism industry in 2020, life for our students and their communities became even tougher. Afrikids did its part to provide some relief. Kitoi organized distributions of basic foodstuffs (corn, beans, rice, cooking oil, salt & soap) at the POSA preschool, at a community church, and at local government schools.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Community - No Child Goes Hungry</image:title>
<image:caption>During the COVID lockdown, Afrikids did food distributions at three government schools, which have far fewer resources than the private schools that our students attend. At the government primary school in Kitoi’s village of Imbaseni, the families of more than 100 children could not afford food for their daily lunch of ugali and beans. Afrikids agreed to do food distributions during the entire school year to ensure that no children would go hungry. Kitoi arranged for a food distribution when we visited the school in September 2021. More than 300 students greeted us with smiles and song. The school principal presented Afrikids with a certificate of appreciation. It was a moving experience.</image:caption>
